Congratulations APM Western Australia for winning the 2024 Employer of Choice Award at the 2924 Blind Australian of the Year Awards that were held in Brisbane on 27 October 2024.
The Employer of Choice Award recognises organisations who not only champion diversity but demonstrate HOW workplace accessibility and inclusion is delivered to create truly diverse, high performing teams and successful business outcomes.
The Award was received in person by Penny Holmes-Brown, National Manager – Strategic Partnerships. The featured image shows Penny with Link Vision CEO – Terry O’Neill on the Red Carpet after receiving the award.
APM won the Employer of Choice Award following a nomination by 2022 Blind Australian of the Year Callum Hooley, who is now a Team Leader for APM Communities (https://apm.net.au/ndis)
in the Northern Territory.
Callum nominated APM to highlight the hiring process, training, and support he received in starting his role, which involves helping other people with disability access NDIS and local community support services.
“I myself can attest that slight nuances to the wording and structure of their approach to hiring made me feel much more comfortable that my condition would be accepted, and I would be given the opportunity to develop where needed,” Callum said.
“It was also comforting to be told at my interview that they ‘were already working with other vision impaired employees, we’ll get you what you need and you’ll be great’.”
The Employer of Choice Award also comes after Callum highlighted APM’s success in establishing an internal Disability Reference Group to support and improve the working experiences for employees and the services they provide to clients with disability.
“This group is open to employees who have disability and provides a space for us to have a voice in the company and have it heard with priority. It’s a welcome development with it not always being easy to cut through the noise in large organisations,” Callum said.
Nominations for the 2025 Employer of Choice Award will open soon.
